He was an ivory importer and salesman and became a partner with Samuel M. Comstock in Comstock, Cheney & Co. in 1862. When Comstock died in 1878, George Cheney became head of the company. The firm manufactured ivory keys for piano and organ keyboards. 2018-12-18/2019-02-11 - From Organ Database Builders editor Charles Eberline, July 14, 2018. - George Arthur Cheney was born in August 1828 in New Hampshire.1 He lived in Zanzibar for many years and acquired knowledge of the ivory trade there. He died in Essex, Connecticut, on May 25, 1901. Although he held the title of president of Comstock, Cheney and Co. at the time of his death, he had yielded to "younger and capable shoulders” the details of running the business as the years advanced.2 Sources: According to "George A.
