2018-12-18/2019-02-11 - From Organ Database Builders editor Charles Eberline, July 17, 2018. - According to Michael Friesen-s article in The Stopt Diapason, Matthew Schlaudecker moved to Chicago in March 1875. He was first listed in the 1876 Chicago city directory as an organbuilder, with a shop at the southeast corner of LaSalle and Michigan (now Hubbard) Streets. The location of his shop changed at least twice in the following years. Beginning in 1880, he took out a large display ad in the directory that read, in part, "M. SCHLAUDECKER, Builder of all Sizes and Styles of PIPE ORGANS.†In 1884 his ad copy changed to "The Chicago Pipe Organ Co. - M. Slaudecker [sic], Pres. - Wm. F. Faber, Sec. & Treas. - Builders of all Sizes and Styles of PIPE ORGANS.†This was the last listing of, or advertising by, Schlaudecker in the Chicago city directory. In the 1885 directory Nels Anderson advertised as an organbuilder at the same address as that of Schlaudecker-s shop; Anderson was not listed in the 1886 directory. Source: Michael D.
