Durst was born March 6, 1883 in Pomeroy, Ohio; he was the brother of Val Durst, (founder of Durst & Co.); and father of Carl F. Durst. Durst start his career with the Barckhoff Organ Co. of Pomeroy, Ohio, in 1906; he also worked with the Wicks Pipe Organ Co. of Highland, Illinois; then the Hinners Organ Co. of Pekin, Illinois, 1912-1917. He was with A. Gottfried Co. of Erie, Pennsylvania, from 1917, as superintendent. In 1920, some of his co-workers left Gottfried, and established National Organ Supply. Four years later, he also left Gottfried to establish his own firm, Organ Supply Corp. of Erie in 1924. Frederick R. Durst died December 26, 1954 in Erie, Pennsylvania, at age 71. His son, Carl, succeeded him as head of the Organ Supply Company. Carl would guide Organ Supply Company through a series of mergers and acquisitions by which it became part of the Organ Supply Industries (OSI) firm. Sources: David H.
