He came to the United States in 1849, and served with distinction in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war he was employed as a machinist in Millbury, later locating to Westfield, where he made his home. He was "an organist of merit, and for twenty-nine consecutive years was chorister for the Methodist Episcopal church of Westfield." *Western Massachusetts, A History 1636-1925* edited by John H.
