John A. Gunter

Notes

2004-10-30/2019-04-29 - Note from the OHS PC Database, derived from A Guide to North American Organbuilders, by David H. Fox (Richmond, Va., Organ Historical Society, 1991). - With Pilcher firm of Louisville, Kentucky, age 14 [circa 1899]; with firm over 40 years [circa 1941 /1942]; died January 2, 1963, age 77. The start date was calculated by the editor based on Gunter's age at the time of his death. Unless he was born on the first or second of January, his birth year would have been 1885. Starting at age 14 would have placed him starting with the company between 1898 and 1900. The end date is less certain, "over 40 years" could mean just past his fortieth anniversary, almost 50 years, or any point between. The year 1942 seems a likely stopping point, as all organbuilding was suspended as part of the war effort that year. –Ed. Source: The Diapason February 1963, 18.
