Fox (Richmond, Va.: Organ Historical Society, 1991). - Representative of Bennett firm of Rock Island, Illinois, in Dallas, Texas, after 1927. The Bennett Organ company was formed by Robert J. Bennett in 1908 as a successor to the partnership of Marshall-Bennett of Rock Island after Octavius Marshall left the firm. Bennet carried on as head of the firm until 1927 when controlling interest was acquired by a group of Rock Island businessmen, although Bennett stayed on to manage the company. Owing to the timing, it is likely Howell was hired by the new owners in an effort to increase sales. The Bennet firm was renamed the Rock Island Organ Company, and continued for another three years, closing in 1930, likely due to the economic conditions following the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent bank and business failures. —Ed.
