(Rutter) Hunter was born in Philadelphia PA, in 1867.1 He was the son of John P. Hunter, and joined his father's business around 1880. His brother, Newton, also worked with the firm but died young,2 and was out lived by his father. At some point in the 1880's, J.P. Hunter became J. P. Hunter & Sons of Philadelphia, PA.3 John R. continued the firm after his father's death in 1902. John R. Hunter died in 1915, but the firm continued until it merged with Bernard Muddler's firm.4 The Muddler-Hunter firm was incorporated in 1921, but likely was doing business prior to incorporation. 2015-11-04/2020-04-09 - From John Speller on Pipe-Chat -- Albert G. and John P. Hunter formed a company named A.G. & J.P. Hunter which traded in Philadelphia in the 1860's and 1870's. By 1880 this had morphed into J.P. Hunter & Sons. There does not seem to be any connection with the London, England firm of A. Hunter & Son. Bernard Mudler was also active as an organbuilder in Philadelphia from about 1870 onwards. The Mudler-Hunter firm was incorporated in 1921 and seems to have resulted from a merger of these two previous firms. [February 1, 2008]
