2004-10-30/2019-04-29 - Note from the Organ Database Builders editor Stephen Hall, June 5, 2017. - Abraham J. Schantz (originally "Tschantz), was the founder of the Schantz Organ firm. He was born March 7, 1849 near Dalton, Wayne Co., Ohio. He was the father of Victor, Edison F., and Oliver A. Schantz. Schantz had a cabinet shop by 1869/ He established a reed organ business in Kidron, Ohio, in 1873; which he relocated to Orrville, Ohio a few years later. He dropped the initial T from the company name early on, but retained the spelling of his own surname until 1899. The firm began building pipe organs as well as reed organs. The firm was renamed A. J. Schantz Sons & Co. in 1892 when the two oldest sons joined their father. Abraham Schantz retired from the firm he founded in 1913; leaving the operation to his three sons. He died in Orville, Ohio, on September 16, 1921.
