Birkmaier was the father of Arthur Birkmaier. He apprenticed with George S. Hutchings of Boston, Massachusetts, pipemaker and flue voicer; he was then with Ernest M. Skinner of Boston, Massachusetts, voicer; partner with Frederick S. Brockbank in voicing firm; with William W. Laws firm of Beverly, Massachusetts, 1921.
