2019-11-02/2019-11-02 - From Organ Database Builders editor Stephen Hall, November 1, 2019. — Harland E. Whitcomb, 95, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at his home, in Springfield, Vermont. Harland E. Whitcomb was born April 22, 1919, in Springfield, Vermont, the son of Sumner and Emily (Barber) Whitcomb. He attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School class of 1937. Mr. Whitcomb served in the United States Army during World War II and during the post-war occupation of Japan. On Aug. 3, 1940, he married Gladys Knight at the North Springfield Baptist Church. She predeceased him on Dec. 14, 1990. On June 5, 1995, he was married to Priscilla Gurney Brown at the North Springfield Baptist Church. Mr. Whitcomb was an electrical engineer with the Bryant Grinder Co. in Springfield for 40 years, retiring in 1981. He was a longtime resident of North Springfield, building his own home from the ground up. Mr. Whitcomb was a longtime member of the North Springfield Baptist Church and served as treasurer for over 20 years. In 1959, he disassembled an 1858 Johnson Pipe Organ in Massachusetts, transported and reassembled it with upgraded electric compressor at the North Springfield Baptist Church. He enjoyed building and refurbishing pipe organs. He was a member of the Yesteryears Car Club and enjoyed building and restoring antique cars, building his own 1910 Stanley Steamer that he displayed at many car shows in the area. He enjoyed photography and maintained his own dark room for many years taking and developing hundreds of black-and-white photos. He held a large collection of glass slides documenting the history of Springfield. He enjoyed hiking and traveling. He also enjoyed classical music, steam trains and his cats. He is survived by his wife Priscilla of Windsor; one son, Ronald Whitcomb of North Springfield; one daughter, Judith Bastille of Springfield; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Maurice and Foster Whitcomb. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the North Springfield Baptist Church. The Rev. George Keeler, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery in North Springfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail Springfield, Vt. 05156.
