2018-12-18/2018-12-18 - From a contribution sent by Todd Farmerie, May 1, 2018. — Almer Fred Wolpert was born December 29, 1885, Salem, he was the son of Ferdinand 'Fred' Wolpert and Anna Mary Lippert. He married Cordelia Akers, June 5, 1910. They had four children: Paul, Jerome, Mary Delores, and Quentin. His last name appears in records as Wolpert, Walpert and Walbert, and his first name often appears as Elmer. He signed his full name as Almer Fred Wolpert on his 1918 World War I draft registration card. He was not employed in 1900, he must have started organ pipe work not long afterwards to have 50 years' experience in 1952. He appears in Louisville, Kentucky city directories at the same time as his brother John, boarding with him through 1910 when they both married, and both were working with Henry Pilcher's Sons. About 1916, he left Louisville for Alliance, Ohio, at the same time two of his brothers and his father moved there from Salem, and they appear to have operated a family-run bakery together - he is a self-employed baker on his September 1918 draft registration card. His residence does not appear in the 1920 census. In 1930 (ED 76-69 p. 9A) he was an "Organ Pipe maker" at an unspecified "Organ pipe factory". By 1940 (ED 76-44 p.5B) he is instead recorded as a bread baker in his own bakery. His obituary (The Salem News August 28. 1964, p. 8) says he operated the Wolpert Bakery for 17 years and also made organ pipes for A.R. Schopp & Sons, retiring October 1963. It does not specify whether these occupations alternated or overlapped. He died August 28, 1964 in a Louisville nursing home.
