2010-04-15/2020-03-28 - From Builders editor, Stephen Hall, March 25, 2020. — Martin Renshaw is a singer, trained as a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral 1955-59, then tenor lay clerk at Canterbury Cathedral 1970-77. He has a degree in the English, Latin and Anglo-Saxon languages and English literature, as well as having spent all his life restoring and making historically-based organs, and writing about and playing them. About 195 organs restored or made in England, Wales, Holland, Norway, France (34 organs to date), Spain, Switzerland (and two exports to USA) since setting up his workshop in October 1967. First English organ maker to put into practice now-current restoration ethics and first to make (four) new ‘restored copies’, in this case of the oldest-surviving English-made keyboard instrument, the c1590 organ in the private chapel of Knole House, which he has looked after since 1975.
