Richards grew up in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, he has a BA in church music (organ major) from Cincinnati Bible College, Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked part time for several builders during his school years. Richards established the Allegheny Pipe Organ Co. in 1980, a service firm doing tuning, repair, and complete rebuilding.
