2023-10-28 - From the *Daily Herald* (Calgary, AB, February 8, 1900): "It will soon be hard to distinguish Calgary from the cities of the effete east. One by one the relics of the wild and woolly days are passing into the great beyond, and as their places are taken by the innovations of cultured civilization the old timer who camped on these foothills in the days when prime beef was produced without the aid of branding irons and cowpunchers begins to wonder where he is at. Times have changed in Calgary since the days when the principal source of amusement consisted in demolishing the proceeds of a permit. The much despised effete is gradually but surely overtaking us. Its westward march has been punctuated by the successive advent of churches, lodges, waterworks, modern business blocks, opera houses, fancy drinks, dudes, Parisian costumes, operatic societies, Albani, Godfrey's Band, cake walks, linotypes, and recently but not lastly by the pipe organ with its deep diapason tones and its gaily decorated front. It only needs now the introduction of street cars, elevators, long sleeved hats and a modern theatre to bring Calgary fully abreast of Toronto, Montreal and other boasting centres of alleged civilization. Well, it had to come sooner or later and now that it is here, set up, and in playing order it is at least consoling to know that it is the best organ of its size that a modern factory could build. It's [sic] cost laid down was $1,500. It has 16 stops, two manuals, pedals, 497 pipes and all the necessary mechanical accessories. It has three departments, the great, well and pedal organs. The great organ contins [sic] the following: Open diapason, melodia bass, melodia treble and principal. In the swell organ are: Viola, stopped diapason bass, stopped diapason treble, harmonia [sic], flute and oboe, while the pedal organ consists of a 16 foot Bourdon. The mechanical accessories are: Great to swell unison couplers, great to swell octave couplers, great to pedal, and swell to pedal couplers, combination pedal piano, ditto forte, bellows, signal, tremulant, and balance [sic] swell pedal. The case is of quarter cut oak and the ornamented diapason pipes in the front complete a most handsome design. The organ stands 17 feet high, is 10 feet deep and 15 feet wide. It was built by the R. S. Williams Co., the builders of the magnificent organ in Grace church, Winnipeg, and other large organs throughout Canada. The organ was used for the first time on Sunday and by the large congregations who attended the church was admired alike for its purity and volume of tone and its chaste design. A largely reinforced choir led the musical service and Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Knox sang, with muct effect a very swell duet by Bliss. The congregation of the Methodist church are to be congratulated upon their enterprise in aquiring such a beautiful instrument, which will certainly add much to the attractiveness of their services." -Andrew Henderson
