2024-11-12 - Brief history of the organ provided by the church: The organ was built and installed in 1924 by Austin Organs, Inc. of Hartford, Connecticut, organ architects and builders, from plans approved after a long study by the Music Committee of the Briarcliff Congregational Church as those best suited to its needs. The organ originally contained about sixteen-hundred pipes of wood and metal varying in length from six inches to thirty-two feet, and in diameter from one-half inch to twelve inches. After a number of modifications over the years, including a major tonal overhaul in the late 1980s, there are now 1767 pipes. There is also a set of chimes containing twenty-five bells. [ed.: no information pertaining to details of changes or firms involved provided] The pipes are divided into 29 sets of pipes, (or ranks). The ranks are grouped into divisions, each of which is assigned to a keyboard (or manual) at the console. The divisions are named Great, Choir, and Swell. In addition, some ranks of pipes, designated to play the base, are assigned to the Pedal division. The organ was donated in 1924 by Walter W. Law, founder of the village of Briarcliff Manor, in memory of his wife, Georgianna Hitt Ransom Law. -Paul R. Marchesano
