2017-11-24 - Updated by Walter Bahn
Richard Purves was associate organist here under Fred Freeman and Harold Hawley right after WWII and before he went to Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
I was organist / music director here at 1st UUA right before Viet Nam after which I became music director / Organist of St Mary-s Cathedral, San Francisco, CA. Richard Ellsasser played concerts here as did others of note. The organ was always considered to be excellent with "Jamison Reedsâ€. A very similar organ was / is/ at St Paul-s on Lake Merit in Oakland, Calif. The organ at St Paul-s had been destined for Grace Cathedral, San Francisco but rerouted to Oakland after EM Skinner received a contract. I think the organ st 1st UUA : was put into storage after an earthquake in the 80s or 90s. It would be an excellent organ in good acoustics !! -Database Manager
