2015-03-27 - Updated through online information from Nathan Bayreuther. -- The following excerpt is taken from "History of the First Congregational Church, 1707-1955", compiled by Mary Scranton Evarts.<br>"A larger organ [replacing a small parlor organ] was much desired and... when the fund reached $2,600.00 a Hook organ was purchased. It was used for the first time August 8, 1869. At the dedication of the organ Mr. Charles Dudley, a Madison son, came from New Haven, by invitation to display the organ's tone and power.... This sweet-toned instrument was in use for over sixty years. It had to have the bellows pumped by hand, and for years the janitor did it, or some not-too-small boy, until it was done by electricity in 1926." <br>When the new Moller organ was installed during the winter of 1929-1930, the Hook organ was sold to a church in Plymouth, CT, where its fate remains unknown. -Database Manager
