2022-02-02 - E. & G. G. Hook & Hastings provided a new mechanical action organ for the new Battell Chapel, Op. 813, 1875, built "without casing and placed m the rear of the pulpit." At some time prior to 1920, when W. King Covell first "heard and tried the organ, some rebuilding had been carried out. The original chests and pipework seem to have been retained, but the original console had been rebuilt and electrified ... " It appears that the Flute a Pavilion 8' had been replaced with a First Open Diapason 8', but no other changes are evident from King Covell's notes. "About the year 1930 [1926?], the organ was taken down, moved to the north (left) gallery, and re-erected there [photograph below] with some additions and changes and an entirely different layout. The gallery apparently was not large enough to hold the instrument, especially with the additions, so the Great division and most of the Pedal were placed under the gallery, just above the floor level of the chapel, and only the Swell and Choir were set up at the gallery level." The original Trumpet 8' and Trombone 16' were replaced with a new reed available at 16', 8', and 4', and the Choir was enclosed; both it and the entombed Great lost most of their effectiveness in their new locations. "The general effect of the organ was dull, remote, and disappointing." -- from *1994 OHS Handbook* -Paul R. Marchesano
