2021-02-17 - A description in the Aug. 1863 issue of "The Monthly Choir and Organ Journal" notes the organ cost $1250 when new, and "Ever since 1855, this organ has only once been cleaned and rectified, by one of Messrs. Hook's workmen, at a cost amounting to a few dollars for traveling expenses and a few days work. When we examined it, the leaky roof of the church had slightly warped the instrument, without having more effect on it than the stopping of the slider of the Principal, which after a few of these scorching days of July we made all right again by a single stroke with a hammer. The organ, even the reed stop, was in good tune, save one note in the Principal and three tones of the Hautbois which by an accumulation of dust would not speak. " -Scot Huntington
2021-02-18 - The "White Church" was built in 1818 and it was into this church that the Hook was installed in 1855. The congregation split in 1858 into "New Schoolers" who continued to worship in the old building and the "New Schoolers" who built a new brick church elsewhere in town. The two congregations merged in 1880, and the old white church was abandoned and the brick church was substantially enlarged. What became of the organ at this point is unknown. The brick church burned to the ground on December 15, 1937 and the congregation's present building was erected on that site. If the Hook or some variation of it had been moved into the brick church, it would have perished in the fire. -Scot Huntington
