2008-11-27 - Updated through information posted to PIPORG-L by Jeff Scofield November 27, 2008: -- "The organ in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at Florida Southern College, Lakeland, FL, was Reuter Op. 659, a three-manual of 33 ranks and 2,241 pipes installed in 1941, which was also the year the chapel was completed. Claude L. Murphree, professor of organ at the University of Florida in Gainesville, played the dedicatory recital on March 29, 1942. The stoplist was published in the October 1942 issue of THE AMERICAN ORGANIST and a photos of the large console with people surrounding was published in the June 1953 issue of THE DIAPASON. The organ and choir were located in the low gallery above and back of the rostrum. In 1971, the organ was sold to the Friends Church in Wilmington, OH." -Database Manager
2008-11-27 - Additional information posted to PIPORG-L by Bud Clark November 27, 2008:-- "I took lessons on the Reuter in the 1960s ... there was a skylight directly over the chambers that invariably broke every time there was a hurricane ... something ELSE authorities forgot to mention to Wright, ... The Reuter, even in its crumbling state, had an heroic sound in that room." -Database Manager
2008-11-27 - Additional information posted to PIPORG-L by Bruce Cornely November 27, 2008: --- "While being shown the innards of the 3m Reuter [in the early 60s] I noticed the lead resonators of the Clarinet wilted and bent over like so many sausages. It was very sad, although they were still tuned and played. There were also water spots from rain puddles on the top of the console. I seem to recall that this was the last Reuter built before WW-II." -Database Manager
