2007-01-28 - Updated through online information from James R. Stettner. -- The chapel is a modest brick basilica atop the Medical Center. The organ was contracted in 1948, but not installed until 1949. It was installed for Reuter by Balcom and Vaughan of Seattle under their opus number 492. According to their files, the organ was originally 2-manuals, 4-registers, 34 speaking stops, 4 ranks, and 304 pipes. Either this is in error, or the organ was later enlarged to its present size of 6 ranks. The 6 ranks present are: Open Diapason, Gedeckt, Salicional, Voix Celeste, Dulciana, and Oboe. It replaced a previous 2/3 Kilgen which was probably one of their "Petite Ensemble" models. -Database Manager

ACTION: E-P unit VOICES: 6 STOPS: 35 RANKS: 6 PIPES: 450 NOTES This organ was originally installed for Reuter by Balcom and Vaughan as their Opus 492, 1949. The organ is installed in the rear gallery of the chapel in a right-side chamber. The console is in fixed position on the right (when facing the rear). The console is rolltop with stopkeys over the Swell manual controlling the stops. There is no combination action, and there are no couplers. The 8’ Voix Celeste automatically draws the Salicional with it when registered. One discrepancy is that the Balcom and Vaughan Opus List records the size of the Reuter as being II-manual and only 4-ranks. Either this is in error, or the organ was subse- quently enlarged to its present size of 6 ranks. All windchests and pipework appear to be Reuter. This organ replaced a previous Kilgen pipe organ that, according to the Balcom and Vaughan Opus List, was II-manuals and 3-ranks, and was moved by them to Hood River, Oregon and installed in the First Church of Christ, Scientist. It was replaced there in 1954 with a new Wicks pipe organ, and the subsequent disposition of the Kilgen is unknown. Sources: Reuter opus list; Balcom and Vaughan opus list; Eugene M.
