2016-06-24 - Updated through online information from Timothy E. Conyers. <br>The Opus list of Reuter Organ Co. listed this as a 3 manual instrument installed in 1954. However, this disagrees with church records and photos of the chancel from that period. The church history, "Faith of our Fathers Living Still" by Mary E. Underwood, page 132, states: "A Reuter two-manual organ was being built for the sanctuary but was not yet complete [at the dedication of the new church in 1952]. The new instrument, which cost $20,500, was installed during the late spring of 1953, and was available for Sunday worship services on June 21. In March 1954 the church voted to name it 'The Welch Memorial Organ.' Mrs. Miriam Welch Moore of New York and her daughter had given $6,000 toward the purchase price in honor of Mrs. Moore's father, L.M. Welch." A choir photo taken in the late 1960's appears on page 145. It shows a two manual instrument with the console located in the center of the chancel choir loft. Pages 138 & 139 describe renovations to the chancel in 1977-78, where it is stated, "The organ would be cleaned and moved to the right and to the floor level, and a piano would be placed on the opposite side..." If viewed from the platform this is the current arrangement of the console today. No mention is made of any expansion to the instrument at that time. The original factory specifications listed the choir division as "prepared" for future expansion which was not done until 2000 by another organ company. From this evidence it is clear the original 1950's instrument was only two manuals, although plans were in place by Reuter for its future expansion. -Database Manager
