The congregation met in a small wood-frame chapel near the Makawao Cemetery and worship was supported by a small parlor reed organ and then a Mason-Hamlin reed pump organ, obtained and modified with a pedal board by H. P. Baldwin so he could use his feet for playing the bass notes and use his only hand to play the melody and harmony. In 1888, Mr. Baldwin offered the church a new site nearer to Paia where a large white-frame structure was built by the congregation. During a trip to the east coast of America in 1888, Mr. Baldwin stopped at the Hilborne Roosevelt Organ Factory in New York City and purchased a new organ for the church. The pipe organ was a small one manual and pedal, 6 rank/11 stop instrument. After an extension was built on the sanctuary to accommodate the organ and choir loft, it was installed in the new 1889 sanctuary. A sum of $26 a year was included in the church budget to pay for someone to pump air into the bellows as the organ was being played. H.P. Baldwin continued to provide his talents to the congregation as organist, playing the pipe organ until he passed away in 1911. Soon plans were made to construct a new sanctuary building in his honor and memory. The beautiful new sanctuary, often described as a hymn and a prayer in wood and stone was designed by the noted architect CW Dickey and is of a basically Gothic design in the style of an English village church with Norman Tower and a distinctly Hawaiian roof-line. The new sanctuary building was designed to provide an organ chamber for a pipe organ. H.A. Baldwin bought the new larger Austin pipe organ (Opus 671) which came with two manuals, pedal and contained 15 ranks of pipes (The gold faade pipes over the choir loft remain from the 1917 organ. They have just recently been resurrected as part of the Enhancement Project) The organ was dedicated to the memory of two of Harry and Ethel Baldwins sons: Leslie and Jared Baldwin. The dedication service for the sanctuary and organ was held September 2, 1917. The Austin organ served the congregation almost 60 years, providing rich and noble sounds beloved by all. However, as it aged in the late 1960s/early 1970s, it became ore and more unreliable Also, its stop registration, the style of the sound of voices used in the early 1900s, had become very dated and limited to only the orchestra mimicking type of music repertoire. The church leadership (headed by Frances Baldwin Cameron) took the major step of buying a new organ. There was strong financial backing throughout the congregation for this big undertaking. The Reuter Pipe Organ (2 Manuel, pedal; 19 Ranks) was installed in the fall of 1975 and Don Alton performed the first official recital on November 5, 1975. The design of the Reuter pipe organ is of the American Classic style. This fine pipe organ is versatile, is appreciated by all as the largest organ on Maui, and has served as a concert instrument for many well-known organists. But its design was heavily influenced on the Organ Reform movement of the1950s/60s, which stressed a return to the German Baroque style of organ building which emphasized low wind pressure, softer lower foundation sonorities, with a strong presence of bright, high harmonics. Eventually, many organists felt that our organ was somewhat lacking in the fuller registrations that would include more sonorous foundation sounds and some of those rich and noble sounds heard in the original Austin organ. As our beloved organ enters into its 43rd year, and as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of our sanctuary; a major organ enhancement program is in its final stages: making changes, enhancements, and additions which are providing for the playing of all types of repertoire and delivering markedly better support for congregational singing. This project has allowed the organ to undergo a transformation and awakening an unleashing and releasing of its long untapped potential. Its rich, sonorous, beautiful sound now supports congregational singing with a rich, noble resonance. All marvel who are now experiencing this dramatic improvement.
