2021-12-15 - The sanctuary building is almost completely intact after the devastating tornado that hit Mayfield on the evening of December 10, 2021. It is the only downtown church to survive without major damage to the worship room. Some windows were broken, roofing materials were stripped from a large portion of the sanctuary roof, and the tower sustained some damage. Only a section of the building immediately behind the chancel suffered major damage with walls and roofing knocked down. This portion of the building contained the organ pipe chambers but from what can be seen on a network news video; it appears only rooms surrounding the chambers were affected by this damage and that the chambers may in fact be intact. The congregation was completing a major renovation of the sanctuary at the time of the tornado. The exposed pipes on cantilevered chest at the front chancel side walls had been removed for this renovation, therefore this instrument may not have suffered damage from the storm. First Baptist has a large campus of buildings, unfortunately many of its other buildings across the street suffered major damage. Source: local news media; a video on YouTube from Washington Post (has interview with pastor & shots of the damage to church campus). -Timothy E. Conyers
