2020-11-13 - From the NYC AGO NYC Organ Project: The Salem Missionary Baptist Church can trace its roots to the early 1900s, when a band of migrant laborers and domestic workers from Virginia and North Carolina met in each other's homes in Brooklyn for bible study. As the numbers grew they formed the Shiloh Mission. Not long thereafter, a stable on Albemarle Road became home to the larger Bethany Mission which, on July 6, 1910, was incorporated as the Salem Baptist Church in Flatbush, Brooklyn. At some point, the congregation moved into its present facilities, built in 1958 as Congregation Shaare Torah, a Conservative synagogue. In addition to the Sanctuary, there is a community center with a gymnasium. -Jeff Scofield
