ACTION: E-P primary VOICES: 37 STOPS: 55 RANKS: 42 PIPES: _____ & unit NOTES The exact distribution of pipes with indications of borrowing and extension is not fully known. The derivations given here were extrapolated from the specification given by the author on pages 281-283 of the 9th Edition the book, The Contemporary American Organ. A photograph of the author at his home console may be seen opposite page 1, and a photograph of the exposed Great and Choir mixtures may be seen on page 28. The following excerpt is from the book. It is not known if any of the manual chests, or indeed even the Great, may have been 68 or 73 notes rather than 61. No couplers were given in the specification. The finger pistons were ascertained from the fore-mentioned photograph as were the toe studs and pedal movements. The organ which has been in the author's home for the past thirty years has been heard by many hundreds of organists, so that its design may well be the subject of general inquiry and interest on the part of other organists. Many years ago, Mr. Gruenstein, the editor of The Diapason described it as a "thoroughbred residence organ of mongrel antecedents." It has been rebuilt, altered, changed and experimented with on many occasions, during the past quarter century. This organ has been used as a "trial" organ for the author. It started as a modest three manual. A fourth manual was added some years ago along with additional stops, stop-keys and gadgets until there was no more room. The Solo organ contains the only unit stops, outside of the Pedal, which has some extensions and borrows. In fact, the Pedal organ would not suit the "baroque" enthusiasts. It relies on the various pedal couplers for its upper work, obviously. The 32' Bourdon is worth its weight in silver, at least, if not gold. It has an accommodating way of fitting under the soft stops as well as under the full organ. The five Roosevelt stops from the old Auditorium organ in Chicago are perhaps the most distinguished voices. They were the choicest ones out of that great old organ of 100 stops. Pipes have been tried and moved from one division to another so often, that the rackboard holes are now all practically interchangeable. Any stop can be placed anywhere, without enlarging the holes in the rack boards any further. The specification as it stands as this edition is being printed is as given below. There is not guarantee that it will remain this way in all respects, for too far in the future. Note that there are two IV Diapason Mixture, and a III Mixture and some flute mutations (unit). The Great Trumpet is very bright, and is the Solo Trumpet. The full Swell is extraordinarily effective, clean, clear, bright, and thrilling. The two Swell Strings when coupled at 16'-8'-4' to Choir, with the three Choir Strings at 8' and 4', plus Vox Humana, with the two soft 16' pedal stops plus 32' Bourdon, give a String Chorus of remarkable character. It is one of Virgil Fox's favorite effects on this organ. The Solo Reeds, and Flutes are all distinguished. The variety, contrast, ensemble, and versatility of this organ are a never failing source of joy and satisfaction to the author, as well as to the many organists who play it. It simply goes to prove that the work of a dozen or more builders may be successfully combined in the same organ, and sound harmoniously together. It is only the builder's representatives who do not always work together so harmoniously on the same prospect. There are two expression chambers, each 16' long by 10' wide and 11' high. The pipes of the 32' Bourdon are laid horizontally, outside the chamber, and speak through a hole cut in the wall at the back of one of the chambers. The blower and relays are in a separate adjoining room, with two blower reservoirs. The organ contained pipework by Hilborne L. Roosevelt, Kilgen, M.P. Möller, the Hall Organ Co., E.M. Skinner, Austin, Aeolian-Skinner, Reuter, Tellers, Pierce, Gottfried, Kimball, and A.R. Schopp & Sons. The Great chimes were by Deagan, and the Choir Vibra harp was by Maas-Rowe. The wind pressures were Great – 5"; Swell - 4"; Choir - 4"; Solo - 6", and Pedal - 6". The console was Austin, the windchests were Möller, the expression shutters were Casavant, the blower was Zephyr, and the rectifier was Orgelectra. In 1964, the organ was moved to St. John Fisher R.C. Church in Chicago by F.C. Wichlac and Associates. The organ was completely re-leathered and the project included some tonal changes and additions.
