2025-01-08 - This entry represents the 1987 renovation and 2024 digital additions of the 1911 W.W. Kimball organ at St. Edward's. More information about the instrument pre-1987 can be found in the 1911 Kimball entry. After decades of being in unplayable condition, Nichols and Simpson organ builders "restored" the 1911 Kimball by using a substantial amount of the original Kimball ranks and by maintaining the overall character of the instrument. The known Kimball ranks and added Nichols & Simpson ranks are noted in the stop list. Unfortunately, the origin of a few ranks remains unknown. In addition to the pipes, Nichols & Simpson built a new 2-manual console that resembles the original Kimball console and either added and/or built new pallet-slider windchests for the manual divisions. The original facade and case work was kept. Due to a limited budget, the last phase of the 1987 "restoration" wasn't completed. This phase was the addition of 9 new stops. These stops would've been comprised of reeds and mixtures. Despite the incompletion, the organ was at least back in good shape for regular use. In 2024, the church received a substantial donation from parishioners to finish the prepared-for specifications in the organ. The Walker digital organ company came in and added digital reeds, a cornet, a mixture, and additional strings to fill in the prepared-for stops. -Daniel Gauger
