Notes

2006-04-25 - Identified through online information from Randall C. Maynard. -- One pipe chamber is on each side of the baptistry, behind and above the choir loft, and a third chamber housing the Solo organ is placed in the attic and speaks into the auditorium through an opening in the ceiling above the choir loft. -Database Manager

2006-04-28 - Updated through online information from Randall C. Maynard. -- Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church was formerly Bell Avenue Baptist Church and this Schantz organ is original to the building. Chilhowee Hills was formed in October 1987 as a result of the merger of the McCalla Avenue and Bell Avenue Baptist Churches and the organ was in consistant use week to week until spring of 2004 when the church undertook a major renovation project which expanded the existing auditorium to include 2,500 seats. The organ was not included in the project and currently is unplayable and in need of total restoration. Console is disconnected and resides in the large welcome center area directly behind the auditorium. -Database Manager

2009-07-07 - Updated through online information from Randall C. Maynard. -- July 6, 2009 Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church now uses all contemporary music and this organ is currently for sale. Organ needs a complete restoration. -Database Manager

2010-06-22 - Updated through online information from Randall C. Maynard. -- June 21, 2010 - This organ is still in same condition as described by myself and Will Dunklin..... it's in good shape in the sense that it has not been moved from the chambers however a complete restoration would be necessary to bring it back to playing condition now. Organ has not been played since late winter 2004 (over 6 years) and is currently being offered for sale by the church. If there is an interest in purchasing the organ the church can be contacted directly. -Database Manager

2013-06-25 - Updated through online information from Randall Maynard. -- This organ was sold and removed from the building in the Fall of 2011. It was sold by the church to R. A. Colby Organs of Johnson City, TN and has been parted and offered for sale by Colby. -Database Manager

Four General Pistons
Four Pistons to each division
Cancel piston
Console Dimension 5’-7” wide, 5’-0” deep over pedal board

Console includes all usual couplers and unison offs.

The shade fronts for the Great/Choir chamber and the Swell chamber measure
approximately 8 feet wide and 12’ tall (this is VERY approximate)

The shade front for the Solo chamber is approximately 8’ wide and 6’ feet tall.

General condition: very good.

The console has been removed to a lobby and the organ is, obviously, not
playable as of October 09, 2009. There is a great deal of construction dust in
the chambers. Damage to pipes is minimal: nothing more than a couple of wooden
pipes with breaks between the foot and the block and a few reed scrolls treated
roughly. I saw no broken or dented pipes. The wind lines appear to be intact
and the reservoirs undamaged. There are duct tape patches on the corners of
several reservoirs, but this is to be expected in an organ still possessing its
original leather.

At the console, the keys and stop knobs all feel solid. There is one key on the
Choir manual with a chipped ivory. All the tilting tablets for the intermanual
couplers are suffering from “celluloid disease” and will need to be replaced.
There are some very minor cosmetic issues with the console’s woodwork.

It is suspicious that there is an unused rack board standing in the Great/Choir
chamber. In the limited light available, I was not able to determine if
possibly a stop had been repitched or replaced or rescaled.

As is Schantz’s practice, the individual mixture ranks have their own stop
actions.
