2023-04-18 - The $36,950 contract for the four-manual Casavant Freres Limitee (Opus 1420) was signed by Father Riley on December 6, 1930. The organ was shipped to Albany by railroad in three freight cars. The installation was done by Arthur Plamondon, Paul-Emile Servais, Georges Girouard and Ernest Blanchard in March and April of 1931. Case ornaments were carved by Elzear Soucy, and the tonal finishing was done on site by Casavant's tonal director, the English-born Stephen Stoot (d. 1959). The organ was completed before Easter Day, 1931. A proposed twomanual chancel organ never went beyond the planning stages, although the rear-gallery console was prepared for the additions. The "opening" occurred May 31, 1931, when Pietro Yon (1886-1943), organist of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, played works of Bach, Bossi, Franck and Guilmant, along with a group of his own compositions. The *Times Union* of June 1, 1931 said that "last night demonstrated by recital, the power and beauty of the new memorial organ of Saint James' Church, Delaware Avenue, heard by the congregation the first time on Easter Sunday. It is a gift from a group of members of the church whose identity has not been revealed by the pastor. . .. " -- *2006 OHS Organ Atlas* -Paul R. Marchesano
