2023-06-16 - In April 1852 the vestry replaced the 1841 organ with a larger instrument. Its arrival in town was noticed by a newspaper reporter: BETHESDA CHURCH ORGAN.-Mr. Jardine succeeded by working night and day in getting the new organ in readiness for use last Sabbath, so that the Easter Festival was kept in fine style. We were present at a trial of the organ on Saturday evening, and were very well pleased with it. The Trumpet stop is very fine, and in combination with the others, Flute, Clariana, &c., &c., gives the organist a good chance to vary the accompaniment according to the requirement of the different pieces of music he may be called upon to perform. We understand that Dr. L.B. Putnam is engaged for the present to play the new instrument. Writing in the Musical World, a correspondent provided additional details: ...the one in the Episcopal Church being a full organ, with two sets of keys and twenty stops (including the Diapasons, Swell, &c:,) and cost something like $1500." Even at this early point in the parish's history, the music program was attracting comment, but not without criticism of the organist: "Dr. L[orin]. B. Putnam, a young physician of the village, acts as organist at the Episcopal Church; and now that he has become a little used to his instrument, he plays very well; but there is yet room for great improvement both in his style and execution. The choir at this church is small, but very good; there being much excellent material in it, including some first rate voices." -- *2006 OHS Orgn Atlas* -Paul R. Marchesano
