2007-03-19 - Identified through on-line information from James R. Stettner. -- The Morton was originally built for the Antler (later, Indian) Theatre in Roseburg, Oregon. It was a 2/5 installed in 1924. In 1944, it was moved to the Methodist Church - probably by Balcom and Vaughan. At this time, a Diapason and a Dulciana were added making it a 2/7. In 1959, a tragic truck explosion in Roseburg leveled several city blocks. The roof of the Methodist Church caved-in, damaging the organ. Mr. Vernon bid on the salvage job and won the bid. He hauled the organ back to Astoria on two weekends. It was carefully rebuilt and enlarged. He added three Gottfried ranks: a Clarinet, Kinura, and Post Horn. He added the toy counter and an 18-note set of chimes from the William Woods organ formerly at the Oaks Park roller rink in Portland. He included the Viol d'Ochestre from his Kilgen, and a chrysoglott from the WurliTzer installed in the Hollywood Theatre in Portland. The organ was first played publicly by Bill Blunk on Christmas Eve in 1960. In 2001, the organ was acquired by Walter & Merlyn Johnson of Tacoma, Washington and installed in their home by Don Wallin. -Database Manager
