2009-03-10 - Updated through on-line information from James C. Burke, Ph.D.. -- In 1923, the congregation of First Church of Christ, Scientist moved to their new church on Chestnut Street. Their original church was sold to Temple Baptist Church. The building was destroyed by fire in 1952. [Source: Tetterton, Beverly. Wilmington: Lost But Not Forgotten. Wilmington, NC: Dram Tree Books, 2005. 77-78.] Linda Stanley, organist at Temple Baptist Church, reported to Sara Bryant of the Wilmington Chapter of the AGO on 9 March 2009 that her research supports the conclusion that the organ was destroyed in the fire. In addition, she stated that present church members alive at the time verify the destruction of the organ.
