2011-02-10 - Posted to PipeChat February 8, 2011 by Charles Richard Lester: -- "1958 Casavant designed by Stephen Stoot. The contract was squeaked through just before Larry Phelps came to the company, so there are some 'old school' resonances in it --- just fine with me: warm Diapasons; sultry Flutes (no coughing or sneezing!); Clarinet instead of Krummhorn etc. ... It's interesting to note that the nomenclature is eclectic rather than French, with German overtones. I don't know whose doing that was -- maybe Mr. Phelps had a 'last word' in the design!

You will note the Great is limited and there's a reason for that. When the organ was in the design stage, the organ loft only had one stairway, on the Swell/Choir side where plenty of room had been provisioned for it. At some point during City inspections, it was determined that according to the Fire Code there had to be two stairways. Guess where the real estate for the additional stairway came from - yep, the Great and Pedal chamber. From what I've been told, they had to cut out the Great Mixture, a second reed, and some stuff in the Pedal.

Also, the architect's original plan called for a second, much larger organ in the chancel. There are two open, shallow chambers down there sufficiently large to hold 30-40 ranks easily. But funds ran dry, and you know how that goes. The chambers still sit empty, waiting to be filled one day.

The organ is fully enclosed, greatly to its betterment. It makes it a far more flexible instrument, well needed with its relatively modest resources. The Great Trumpet is fairly powerful, and it's nice to be able to express it and add to the enclosed Swell. Makes a very lovely 'Full English Swell' sound." -Database Manager

2013-09-20 - Updated through online information from Charles Richard Lester. -- The organ is currently intact and unaltered but needs a complete overhaul -- dead notes; leaking leather in most of the reservoirs & chests; console tubular pneumatic action almost totally out of commission; problems with some metal ranks w/ wooden stoppers. The congregation has greatly dwindled over the years and, while they appreciate the value of the organ, simply do not have the financial means to do the work necessary on it -- let alone expand its tonal resources. -Database Manager
