2008-02-18 - Identified through online information from William M. Worden. -- Three-manual Henry Erben installed when the church was opened in 1848; it was then SS. Peter & Paul Cathedral. Organ replaced by Kilgen, 1914. Pedal Open Wood 16' and Great double (facade) survived. Kilgen replaced ca. 1980 and the pedal wood disappeared. The magnificent "Greek Revival" case and the Erben facade pipes remain in place in the rear gallery. This is said to be the only extant Erben case of this large size in this style. -Database Manager

2023-07-12 - From - Detroit Free Press, Detroit, MI. June 8, 1848 pg. 2 The Large Organ For The Cathedral- The large organ, built by Mr. Henry Erben, of New York, for the Catholic Cathedral of this City, has just been completed and soon will be shipped from New York. An Eastern paper gives the following description of it:- "It is in the Corinthian style of architecture 28 feet front, and 40 feet high. It has thee sets of keys, and twenty-five pedals. It is one of the largest organs in the United States. It has five coupling stop that connect the different sets of keys, and nearly two thousand pipes. We especially commend the diapasons of this organ, for the beautiful quality and excellent volume of their tones: also, the trombone, the flute, clarionet and bassoon stops, are very fine. When all the various stops are combined, the effect is astonishing. Its cost is $6,000" The Cathedral was dedicated in 1848, but later turned over to the Jesuits, who continue it as a church. -Steven Bartley
