2017-12-22 - A deaconess was a woman "serving Christ and his church, who is free from all other duties and desires to devote her time and effort to the service of the Lord in ministering to suffering humanity." The Mennonite-affiliated hospital merged with the Disciples of Christ-affiliated Axtell Christian Hospital on January 1, 1988, to become the Newton Medical Center. -Database Manager
