2024-07-02 - According to Stephen L. Pinel, The Work-List of Henry Erben: Organ Builder in Nineteenth-Century New York (Villanova, PA: OHS Press, 2021), 338, the Steere & Turner organ replaced an 1857 Erben organ, which in turn had replaced an 1837 Erben organ: "In April, 1885, the Vestry discussed replacing the Erben with a larger instrument. . . . Ultimately, St. John's bought a two-manual organ from Steere & Turner, installed in the spring, 1886. This organ, while it appears in their manuscript ledgers, does not appear in the firm's published work list, and may have been second-hand. The instrument had 5 stops each on the Great and Swell, and one in the Pedal. Although minutes related that the Erben was taken in trade for an allowance of $325 by Steere & Turner, such was not the case." Instead, St. John's sold the Erben to St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville. Pinel says nothing about any later organ in St. John's. -Charles Eberline
