REPAIRS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA: Although the flood waters did not reach the Cathedral, a large amount of water blew into the tower and flooded down the walls of the organ chamber. Several main chests at the back of the chamber were soaked and damaged beyond repair. Fortunately, these were all the recycled chests from the Hoffman project and were replaced by new pitman chests. The new (2004) chests were able to be repaired. A few Moller wood pipes were replaced, but other than that, all the pipework, after a good cleaning and replacement of felt packing on the capped metal pipes, was in good shape. As a precaution, all the reed pipes were compl- etely disassembled and cleaned. The organ was completely removed from the chamber so that the walls could by cleaned and painted (and waterproofed!). Due to the inevitable discussions among the various insurance companies involved it wasn't until 2008 that the organ was completely reinstalled and playable. The insurance settlement was generous enough to enable a few additional modifications to the stop list: GO 8' Montre II 1-12 new pipes to replace the Moller ones RE 8' Montre II 1-16 new pipes to replace borrow from the Flute RE 8' V.
