Notes

2009-03-18 - Identified through online information from James R. Stettner. -- This was the rebuilding and enlargement of a 1923, 2/8 Morton-Wicks originally built for the Chehalis Theatre in Chehalis, Washington and relocated "as is" to St. Paul's by Balcom and Vaughan in 1935. A new 3-manual console was built by B and V, but the Choir division was always prepared-for and never added. The facade pipes were moved inside the chamber. Several ranks were added on new Kilgen-style E-P unit chests. ca. 2005, St. Paul's congregation had dwindled and merged with nearby St. John's Lutheran. The organ was left behind in the building which became known as Fremont Abbey. The new congregation had wanted to keep and refurbish the organ, but it is now for sale. -Database Manager

2015-06-24 - Updated through online information from Sean Haley. -- As many leaders and staff have come and gone over the years at the Fremont Abbey, the organ was allowed to be damaged. Many pipes were removed from chests as chamber and access hallway walls were moved to make additional office spaces or chamber space used for storage. Many pipes were carelessly tossed in to piles, and much of the treble pipes for many ranks have disappeared. The console was removed to allow for a completely open space many years ago, but no one seems to know where. Chests, winding, and many of the larger pipes are still in place but the organ can be considered a total loss. Offers to remove and salvage what was left of the instrument have been declined. -Database Manager

NOTES
The organ was contracted thru Robert-Morton, but was actually built by Wicks. It was
2-manuals and 8-ranks, and was built for the Chehalis Theatre in Chehalis, WA. It had
an exposed façade of 27 pipes painted gold with a floral pattern located near the top
of the pipe. The original seven manual ranks and one Pedal rank are all still extant
and on their original chests. The original manual compass was 73 notes.

On the present instrument, the Great 8' Open Diapason was new in 1954. It sits on a
new electro-pneumatic unit chest located to the left of the original Wicks chest. The
Great 4' Octave is from what is presently the Swell 8' Violin Diapason. The chimes
action is present in the instrument, but the actual chimes tubes have been removed.

On the Swell, the 8' Violin Diapason is actually the original 8' Open Diapason – once
partly in the façade. The present 8' Salicional is marked “Oboe” on the pipe and would
seem to have been a labial Oboe. The present 8' Voix Celeste is marked “Salicional.” The
8' Trompette is another rank which was added by Balcom and Vaughan in 1954. It has flared,
spun-metal bells, and sits next to the added Great 8' Open Diapason on the electro-
pneumatic unit chest. Notes 1 - 12 are offset on a chest located over the expression
shutters.

The Pedal 16' Open Diapason of wood also seems to have been added by Balcom and Vaughan
in 1954, but it is clearly older pipework and of unknown provenance. The 16' Gedeckt takes
notes 1 – 12 from the 16' Bourdon on soft wind, and the balance from the Swell Stopped
Flute. The 5-1/3' Quint takes its first 23 notes from the Pedal wood Open Diapason unit,
and notes 24 – 30 from the Swell 8' Violin Diapason. Similarly, the 4' Principal takes
it's first 18 notes from the Pedal wood Open Diapason unit, and notes 19 – 30 from the
Swell 8' Violin Diapason.

The present Choir division is prepared-for only. While it controls no voices of its own
it may be used as a coupling manual for the Swell division.

The console was supplied new by Balcom and Vaughan in 1954. Stops are controlled by
tilting tablets in drawknob jambs. Combinations may be adjusted from two setter boards
located in vertical drawers in each of the two stopjambs.
