2009-06-25 - Identified through information from Steve Lawson: -- "I have accumulated much information about Sailors' Snug Harbor organization while searching for the specifications of the two organs that were in the chapel. <br>"Indeed, the terms 'chapel' and 'church' were often interchanged in the past centuries. Printed accounts of the building have referred to both 'Randall Memorial Chapel' and 'Randall Memorial Church.' Randall Memorial Chapel was in fact modeled after St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in London. <br>"Concerning the fire, The New York Times (Dec. 27, 1904) reported that 'The interior of the structure is almost an absolute wreck. The pipe organ, one of the finest in America and said to have been the last built by Hilborne Lewis Roosevelt of New York; ... and the chancel-all are gone.' And in the same article, 'The organ, the most-talked-of piece of work in all Snug Harbor, was completely destroyed.' Of course, we know that the organ was built by Frank Roosevelt as Opus. 488 in 1891, which is five years after the death of Hilborne L. Roosevelt in 1886. <br>"The rebuilt chapel/church had an organ built by the Estey Organ Company, Op. 350 (1906). While it is slightly possible that something from the Roosevelt was salvageable and incorporated in the new organ, the only way to know for sure would be to see the Estey Shop Order. However, the kind folks at the Estey Organ Museum (who have graciously copied and sent to me every Shop Order they have for their instruments in NYC) report that the records for Opus 1 - 760 are missing." -Database Manager
