2010-06-01 - Updated through information posted to PIPORG-L June 1, 2010 by Cullie Mowers: -- The pretty little organ at Jacksonville Methodist was built by Garrett House, of Buffalo NY, in 1872 for the congregation's previous building, and moved into the present building in 1921. In the mid-1960s the facade of half-round wooden dummy pipes was removed and simple woodwork installed in front of the organ and, on the right side of the pulpit platform, the upright piano. The piano did not need a sound opening, but a grill was installed above it, matching that for the organ, which houses the PA system loudspeaker.

Construction is very simple and straightforward; an interesting detail is that the interior moving parts of the stop actions are beautifully machined out of walnut, looking as if they were designed to be visible.

The organ is not loud in the church, but could be heard better if the installation were improved. Service access is via a narrow hallway behind the organ, and back there the sound is surprisingly bright and present. Recently there have been serious thoughts given to improving the situation by re-working the sound opening for the organ. -Database Manager
