2022-11-15 - Che.lllber organ in Appleton Hall: George Stevens, 1857. Restored 1961 by Nelson C. Barden. Inscription on low D, stopped bass to 4' Principal (an older pipe than the rest, with oak cap and stopper): "Be it known that this pipe is 87 years old Feb. 7, 1857. It was made in London A.D. 1760 by John Snetzler." When Stevens replaced the. old Snetzler organ in Christ Church, Cambridge, 1845, he saved a number of wooden pipes, and put single ones in several of the organs he later built. Inscription on low C#, 4' Principal stopped bass: "John M, Whittemore, 15 Bigelow St., Cambridgeport, Mass." Inscription on panel: "Sept. 30, 1879. Mr. Horatio Davis took to pieces and set it up again with help of John and Chas. Whittemore," On case: "Organ repaired by Mr. Davis and Mr. Butler from Mr. Stevens Organ Factory April 17, 1888." "Geo. Stevens. (illegible) Butler," This organ was originally built for Rev. Thomas Whittemore (1800-1861), a Universalist clergyman and writer of Cambridgeport, and was given to the S.P.N.E. by his descendants in 1945. Demonstrated by E.
