2023-06-19 - The organ has been unused for years, and is not playable. There are several ranks of pipes in a Swell enclosure, plua a 16' Sub Bass flanking both sides of the enclosure. Several reed pipes are scattered around, but there is no complete rank. There is a fine looking set of 16' Diapason pipes with guilded mouths, that have been removed and stood up against one of the interior walls. The 2 manual console has had almost all of the stop tabs removed, along with other pieces of panelling. Below the bottom manual is a partial keyboard, presumably for playing the chimes, which still hang inside the enclosure. This historic brick church is on the corner of Park and Birchard Avenues in Fremont, Ohio. President Rutherford B. Hayes was once a member of the congregation, hence the name. In the 1960's, the Hayes Methodist congregation move to a new building on Fangboner Road, leaving the organ behind. It became the First Brethren Church, who, at one point had the organ restored. That congregation moved out, and it became Heritage Church. From that time on, the organ was no longer used, being replaced by contemporary worship music. Heritage Church also moved out several years ago, leaving the church unoccupied ever since. A local business man purchased the church, in order to save it from being torn down. He had some structural work done, and has made the interior and exterior presentable. Unfortunately, the cost of restoring the organ is prohibitive. -Samuel F Schaeffer
