2012-03-28 - Identified through online information from James R. Stettner. -- According to the published centennial history of the 1899 stone ediface, "A History of the Ada United Methodist Church, Celebrating a Century: Reflections of Faith 1899-1999" the cornerstone was laid May 29, 1898. The anticipated cost including the organ was $26,800.00. "In 1899. . .they signed a contract 'for organ bought of John Brown' of Wilmington, Delaware." The new church was dedicated June 18, 1899. In 1901, the organ was rented to three young ladies in the village for 25 cents per practice. On February 18, 1903, the church suffered a fire but survived sustaining between $5000 and $7000 dollars in damage, reportedly all covered by insurance. The organ, installed in an alcove, escaped both direct fire and also water damage. It was replaced in 1936 by a new organ built by the Toledo Pipe Organ Co. who allowed $800 value taking the Brown organ in trade. Its subsequent disposition is unknown. -Database Manager
