Notes

2013-11-16 - This entry describes an original installation of a new pipe organ. Identified by T. Daniel Hancock, using information found in Gleason, Virginia Lee, "The History of St. Paul United Methodist Church." -- From Gleason's 1981 historical narrative: "'Brother M.M. Hawkins moved that we leave the buying of a pipe organ until such a time as the church had somewhat recovered from the expense of the new building. Immediately the fight was on. The pastor believed the best time to put in the organ was right now. Arguing that the church completed in every particular would be an inspiration on dedication day to the congregation to give more liberally. Besides, how could we have a great dedicatory service of the finest church in Springfield without special music? There was much speaking all in the finest Christian spirit but when the vote was taken the pastor was hopelessly defeated. The [next] morning was the dawning of a real blue day to the pastor. As he sat and thought and prayed over the matter there was a caller at his study door. When the door opened, there stood Miss Lizzie McDaniel.' McClure continues to report that Miss McDaniel agreed to pay for the organ which was installed in time for the dedicatory services at a cost of $3500." -Database Manager
