Notes

2014-10-01 - Originally installed in the Clyde Holloway residence in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1967; moved with Dr. Holloway to Houston ca.2000; removed by Tom Martin of St. Dunstan-Art Organworks and shipped to Boone, North Carolina, where it was installed in the residence of Dr. Joby Bell by Brad Rule in 2014. -Database Manager

2014-10-13 - Updated through online information from Joby Bell. -- The lowest six notes of the 16' Gedeckt are served by an original offset chest, which includes racking and all parts for vertical or horizontal installation. The six pipes are fitted with original toe plates for physical attachment to the offset chest. The horizontal racking appears to be original. The vertical racking appears to be new. This would suggest that the pipes were always installed horizontally. In 2014 they were installed vertically in Dr. Bell's residence using the newer vertical racking. There are two additional offset toeboards of unknown origin. These are served by tubes off the main chest to allow installation of 16- and 8- pipes under short ceilings. The offsets were in regular use throughout Mr. Holloway's ownership of the organ. In Dr. Bell's residence, the organ was installed in a high-ceiling room, allowing for the placement of all pipework (except the lowest six notes described above) on the original main chest, without the use of the two offset toeboards. An uninstalled walkboard was found at Mr. Holloway's residence before removing the organ in 2014. The walkboard does not appear to be original, and it showed no sign of ever having been installed but was found pre-drilled for attachment. It is now installed in Dr. Bell's residence, in the absence of the optional offset toeboards described above. Curiously, the organ also includes a complete, alternate set of skirt panels of unknown origin, showing no sign of ever having been installed. They are of lighter weight and somewhat less solid construction than the original panels still in use. If installed, the alternate panels would cover the main chest up to the rackboards, whereas the original panels cover only up to the toeboards. There is also one lone, large black frame piece, suggesting an early design for a screen around the pipes. This does not appear to have ever been installed. There is a Zimbelstern activated by a toe stud, all components of which appear to be original. However, its wiring is piggy-backed onto the switched outlet inside the console, suggesting later addition. All cloth-covered wiring was updated by Stephen Collins in the late 1990s. Apart from the updated wiring and the unknown origin of the offset toeboards, walkboard and Zimbelstern, the organ is in original condition and operation. All leather, winding components, and power supply are original. -Database Manager

2020-04-24 - In December 2017 Bradley Rule of B. Rule & Co. moved this organ from Joby Bell’s residence into his office in the Hayes School of Music, Appalachian State University. The ceiling height in the office is of sufficient height to allow full vertical installation of all pipes as they were in the home. The extra skirt panels described earlier, being of unknown origin and sub-standard craftsmanship, were discarded. The large, single black frame piece of unknown origin and use was also discarded. All parts for future horizontal bass pipe installation and offset lower octaves installation have been retained. -Joby Bell
