Notes

2014-12-15 - This entry describes an original installation of a new pipe organ. Identified by James R. Stettner, based on information from The builder's Facebook page. -- The organ is located in the rear gallery, and is housed in a case cantilevered off of the back wall. It is a hybrid instrument. -Database Manager

2019-07-24 - Updated by Sean Haley, who maintains the organ.

The organ project began as a personal hobby for Robert as early as 2010 when the church\'s existing Conn electronic organ with speakers at both ends of the church began to fail. Being a career IT professional, Robert was enamored with the possibilities of Hauptwerk and the Mt. Carmel E.M. Skinner sound set. When left over components were available from the Moller organ of Incarnation Episcopal, Great Falls MT., Robert purchased those pipes as well as surviving remnants of the Wicks organ from University Presbyterian Seattle, WA. and was determined to make the instrument at Zion a large hybrid. A redundant Aeolian-Skinner console was purchased and fitted with used Allen stop actions found on eBay and a loosely installed Artisan uMidi system. While not being adequately equipped or experienced Robert also set out to build his own wind chests for the obtained pipework. Using general grade lumber found at the local home improvement store and used Reisner magnets also found online, crude chests were assembled.

With the help of Franck Payne of Spokane a mildly attractive cantilevered case with facade pipes was created behind which were located several pairs of speakers. The hybrid part of the project had waned on for nearly a decade and the church as well as personal finances were growing weary of it dragging on. Other church members stepped in to fund the project on a peace-meal basis and just make it work to get it done. Unfortunately the homemade chests were not well executed and required extensive work to make them somewhat functional. The new cantilevered case had to be completely rebuilt with proper structural engineering to support the weight.

Unfortunately the instrument suffers all the maladies of one made with used components combined with digital voices. -Database Manager
