2015-01-08 - Altered and relocated existing organ. Identified by Sean Haley, based on personal knowledge of the organ. -- This organ was originally built by Balcom & Vaughan of Seattle circa 1940 for Little Church on the Prairie, Lakewood, Washington. Originally installed, the main chamber was located at the front of the space on the left side. The console also placed near the chamber. A two rank Echo division consisting of a flute and string was located in a small attic chamber at the rear of the space. The organ was removed at the time the new mechanical action organ by Adrian Koppejan of Chilliwack B.C. was installed sometime in the early-mid 1980's. Since it was reported that this organ came from Canada it is reasonable to assume that Koppejan took the organ and most likely sold it to a third party across the border.<br>At some point the rather usual 1940's tonal design, consisting mostly of 8' stops, was radically altered. A new chorus of Laukhuff cone tuned tin principals at 8'TC, 4', and 3 rank mixture replaced a Diapason (retaining the 8' bass), Melodia, and Dulciana. The chest is unenclosed at the back central portion of the chamber. The bulk of the Swell (loosely enclosed in a faced foam board insulation box) incorporates the former 2 stop echo chest in this installation, and was altered with used pipe work to provide lots of unified flute upperwork. Retaining the 8' Stopped flute and Salicional (only at TC), alterations include a 4' Rohr Flute, 2 2/3 Quinte, 2'Principal, and a french style Trompette also made by Laukhuff. The 16' Pedal Bourdon extends from the heavily borrowed Stopped flute.<br>Given the technical complexity it is believed that Koppejan may have made the tonal changes including a new channeled mixture toe board cap as well as several racking changes to accommodate the revisions on the B&V chests. The installation of the organ at American Reformed was done primarily by a relative of members of the church, who was an electrician by trade. The family, as the primary contributors to the project, wanted to replace a previous electronic instrument upon the completion of the expansion of the front section of the building (ca 1988). The organ suffers an expectant list of issues of a heavily used and modified instrument with worn out components and a layout/installation not professionally performed. The facade of the chamber was made primarily by church members consisting of a number of old pipes altered and painted, most likely including some of the bass pipes of the original organ. The center section of the facade are Stinkens principals from the former Lake Grove Presbyterian (Lake Oswego, OR) Balcom & Vaughan organ recently replaced by Bond. -Database Manager
