2015-04-07 - The Portola Theatre opened in September 1909. With 1,100 seats, it was one of the first large theatres built on Market Street after the 1906 earthquake and fire. As even larger and grander movie palaces were built in the area, competition forced the Portola to close in 1928. The building was then converted to a bus station for the Gray Line Tours. In 1944, the building reopened as a movie theatre that ran exploitation-type films. In 1957, owner Harry Faros changed the name to Farros Theatre, and it was renamed the Paris Theatre in 1961. It closed in August 1971 and was razed. -Database Manager
