2015-06-14 - An original installation. Identified by steve bartley, using information found in Lewis & Hitchcock historical files. Hand written note on organ by Lew Herpst or Ted Lewis.
This church built a new and larger building at 2891 N Charles St which opened in early 1930s. The handwritten note was probably part of an evaluation made by the Lewis & Hitchcock firm, after the congregation moved to the new building. The old building became the church school, and is now an office building. The note includes a specification of the organ and makes mention that it was "rebuilt by Henry Niemann"
This was a new building in 1888 and was also the home parish of his wife and at least one daughter after Henry's death in 1900. 2016-09-09 - Updated through online information from Steve Bartley.
The Sun Paper, 6/5/1943, pg 7 gives a rare account of the conversion of the original SS Philip and James building, which were converted into apartments. It also states that the old pipe organ, which had been moved to the new building, one block north of the old building, had been given to the "man who installed the new organ." The Casavant organ Company records may be able to reveal if they used local Baltimore help in the installation of their new organ, or of they sent their own crew. It is unlikely that they would have wanted to ship a very old 2nd hand organ to Canada, so possibly a local Baltimore organ man was utilized to remove the old organ as preparation for the new installation. By the 1920s there were no Baltimore organ builders active, all those who had been in the business of building new instruments had phase out of that aspect of the business and were acting only in the capacity of service and repair. -Database Manager
