2011-07-05 - Updated through on-line information from Ronald Crowl. -- The building, original known as "Carpenter Chapel" (named for Philo Carpenter) was the primary worship space for the original Chicago Theological Seminary, whose efforts were relocated to Hyde Park decades ago. A bust of Philo Carpenter survives in the rear of the building, executed by noted Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft. The organ was a rare early example of an electro-pneumatic "slider-pulldown" arrangement with a detached three-manual console. Use of the organ was abandoned in the late 1950s and the rare original console disappeared shortly thereafter. The pitch of the organ was always A=435, limiting its usefulness. Much of the pipework was cone tuned, and had not fared well in the 1940s and 50s. Many observed that the reeds were very unstable and the action noisy. -Database Manager
